Second storey deck replacement and enhancement

This project was begun in May of 2018 and completed in October of 2018. The total cost ($17K) included the replacement of the small third-storey deck and the front door deck (pictures to come in spring 2021).

The client wanted to replace their rotting, wooden deck with a combination of wood and composite, extending the deck out an extra 8 inches.

After going over many railing and baluster options, she was surprised at how good hogwire looks, and how well it could be secured to the railing and posts.

Partway through the design process, she asked to make the rail posts extra tall so that I could add a trellis that would be strong enough for her to string cable to from the house, to slide sun shades across in the summer.

The client was very hands-on and even helped with the demolition and rebuild. This helped to keep costs down. Another thing that kept the costs down was her decision to do the sealing and painting herself.

I will update you with recent photos of the painted deck shortly.

Update: In June of 2023, two large cedar trees fell on the deck!! The deck proved to be so sturdy, that the line of the deck never even got wavy (which you can see in one of the photos). The trellis proved invaluable because it protected several windows and the roof line. Only some eavestroughs, a panel section of the railing, and the trellis’ 2-by-6’s needed replacing. Oh, and 2 trellis posts needed straightening.

After Jon made the repairs, the homeowners painted the house, so the last two photos are of this gorgeous deck in its new colors.
